Chapter 3: The difference between Library of Congress Classification (LCC) and Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC)

Generally, books and materials in the library are classified by form of materials and by subject for ease of use.

Classification System's the systematic arrangement of books and other materials into groups or classes.  Libraries use classification systems to locate information resources.

Dewey Decimal Classification System
DDC was developed by Melvil Dewey, an American librarian.
DDC is used by small and medium-sized libraries, e.g. school libraries, and public libraries.
DDC is subject-related hierarchically and mnemonically organized by discipline.
DDC divides knowledge into 10 major classes:

             000    Generalities
             100     Philosophy and related disciplines
             200    Religion
             300    Social sciences
             400    Language
             500    Pure science
             600    Technology (Applied science)
             700    Arts
             800    Literature
             900    Geography and history
Each class is subdivided by two additional numerals and a decimal point, eg. 300 Social sciences.

     Library of Congress Classification System
LC was drawn up by Herbert Putnam.
LC is used by large-sized libraries, e.g. academic libraries and special libraries.
LC divides knowledge into 21 main classes, and uses both letters and numerals.

             A         General Works
             B         Philosophy, Psychology, Religion
             C         Auxiliary Sciences of History
D         History: General and Old World
             E-F      History: America
             G         Geography, Anthropology, Recreation
             H         Social Sciences
             J          Political Science
             K          Law
             L          Education

Chapter 2: Objective facts / Subjective opinion

Objective facts

City of Carlsbad

Carlsbad is a coastal resort city lying along the Pacific Ocean in San Diego's North County region of Southern California. Carlsbad is located 87 miles (140 km) south of Los Angeles and 35 miles (56 km) north of downtown San Diego. High property values, very high median family incomes, and high education levels have made Carlsbad one of the wealthiest communities in California and in the United States. The majority of San Diego County's top twenty-five employers have their locations closer to Carlsbad than San Diego.[2] A coastal location, thriving commercial sector, and award-winning school district all contribute to the high standard of living in the area. It is one of the highest-income places in the United States. The city is mainly known for shopping, tourism, a booming high-tech industry, and resort living. The population was 105,328 at the 2010 census.
The city has drafted ordinances protecting sensitive wildlife habitat, becoming one of the first municipalities in the State of California to do so. The city has also pledged to protect a specified amount of land within the city limits from development of any kind and spends significant funds to restore habitats destroyed by newer development projects.

Flower Fields

Every year from early March to early May, The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch blossom into a spectacular sea of brightly colored ranunculus flowers. Visitors can view and tour the fields in Carlsbad. Open to the public seven days a week, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Directions: Interstate 5 to Palomar Airport Road Exit. Head east one block and turn left on Paseo Del Norte. Make a right into the first driveway. Guided tours must be arranged in advance.

 Carlsbad Premium Outlet
This place has a nice weather with ocean breeze since is close to the beach. However, there are not as many shops as the Chelsea Premium Outlet at Camarillo and Desert Hills but enough for you to spend your wallet if the shops are what you looking for. They even have a Lacoste outlet selling their cloths below retail prices. Their regular polo shirt was selling for $53 at this store. We initially wanted to buy but didn't find the color we like, so we walked out the shop empty handed.

 Carlsbad Beach

I LOVE THIS BEACH. There's something about it that makes me happy and puts me at peace every single time. It's not ghetto like Chula Vista, nor does it have the slight snobbery of La Jolla/Del Mar. I commented to my friend that it was made for modest middle-class citizens like ourselves who just want to enjoy the ocean. I hate crowds, and it's never too crowded, even on the 4th of July. I love walking and running on the sidewalk that lines the beach, giving me a view of the sand and sparkling water from up high. I love running on the sand in the morning when there are just a few people around. I love the little shops and restaurants, none of which are particularly amazing. I usually like to come here with a friend, lay out for a couple hours, then walk to Starbucks or a yogurt place down the street, or maybe get a burrito or brunch. There's nothing extra special about anything here, but somehow the parts come together to form a perfect whole. I realize I sound like I could make love to this beach right now and to be honest, I can't explain why...nor do I care to!

What Carlsbad City Beach lacks in amenities it makes up for in crowd quality.  The patrons of the beach are friendly and respectful of your space.  However, I cannot say the same of the sea birds.  If you leave your bags unattended for too long, you can expect some poaching from these winged scavengers.

Parking can be difficult on the weekends, so don't be surprised if you have to make a little trek to get to the sand.  And don't be surprised if you see a dog or two running around unleashed, it's allowed.

Chapter 1: Data, Information, Knowledge, and Wisdom...

What is information?

Information in its most restricted technical sense is an ordered sequence of symbols that record or transmit a message. It can be recorded as signs, or conveyed as signals by waves. Information is any kind of event that affects the state of a dynamic system. As a concept, however, information has numerous meanings.[1] Moreover, the concept of information is closely related to notions of constraint, communication, control, data, form, instruction, knowledge, meaning, mental stimulus, pattern, perception, representation, and especially entropy.

What is data?

The term data refers to qualitative or quantitative
attributes of a variable or set of variables. Data (plural of "datum") are typically the results of measurements and can be the basis of graphs, images, or observations of a set of variables. Data are often viewed as the lowest level of abstraction from which information and then knowledge are derived. Raw data, i.e. unprocessed data, refers to a collection of numbers, characters, images or other outputs from devices that collect information to convert physical quantities into symbols.

What is knowledge?

Knowledge is a familiarity with someone or something, that can include facts, descriptions, information, and/or skills acquired through experience or education. It can refer to the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject. It can be implicit (as with practical skill or expertise) or explicit (as with the theoretical understanding of a subject); and it can be more or less formal or systematic. In philosophy, the study of knowledge is called epistemology, and the philosopher Plato famously defined knowledge as "justified true belief." There is however no single agreed upon definition of knowledge, and there are numerous theories to explain it.
What is understanding?

Understanding (also called intellection) is a psychological process related to an abstract or physical object, such as a person, situation, or message whereby one is able to think about it and use concepts to deal adequately with that object. Understanding is a relation between the knower and
an object of understanding. Understanding implies abilities and dispositions with respect to an object of knowledge sufficient to support intelligent behavior.

What is wisdom?
Wisdom is a deep understanding and realizing of people, things, events or situations, resulting in the ability to choose or act or inspire to consistently produce the optimum results with a minimum of time, energy or thought. It is the ability to optimally (effectively and efficiently) apply perceptions and knowledge and so produce the desired results. Wisdom is also the comprehension of what is true or right coupled with optimum judgment as to action. Synonyms include: sagacity, discernment, or insight. Wisdom often requires control of one's emotional reactions (the "passions") so that one's principles, reason and knowledge prevail to determine one's actions.

What is information literacy?

Several conceptions and definitions of information literacyhave become prevalent. For example, one conception defines information literacy in terms of a set of competencies that an informed citizen of an information society ought to possess to participate intelligently and actively in that
society. The American Library Association's (ALA) Presidential Committee on Information Literacy, Final Report states, "To be information literate, a person must be able to recognize when information is needed and has the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information."

What is mind map?

A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid to studying and organizing information, solving problems, making decisions, and writing.
